Plastic Odyssey boat at sea, visible waste in the water.

This week’s Global Recycling Day, recognizes and celebrates the importance that recycling plays in helping preserve the World’s natural resources.

This year’s theme for Global Recycling Day is #recyclingheroes – a great opportunity to look at the latest leg in the journey of Plastic Odyssey and its 3-year global mission to discover and share concrete solutions to help overcome the plastic waste crisis – on land and sea.

Having previously visited destinations in Europe, Africa, South America, French Polynesia and Southeast Asia, Plastic Odyssey and its team have started its journey into the Indian Ocean and recently docked in Chennai (India).

The team is hosting an exhibition called “Treasure Trunks”, showcasing the array of identified alternatives to plastic (40+) that the team has seen in various stopover countries.

Through objects, ideas and testimonies, the exhibition focuses on the importance of tackling plastic pollution, by reducing its usage, and promotes environmental consciousness and sustainable practices.

During its voyage the Plastic Odyssey team has seen ocean and land plastics turned into an array of materials including eyeglasses, building planks, corrugated roofing, furniture and giftware.

Following the exhibition later this month, Plastic Odyssey will journey to Port Louis in Mauritius, Tamatave in Madagascar, Mahé in the Seychelles, and the Comoros before arriving in Mombasa in Kenya in August.

At each stopover, Plastic Odyssey will be visiting communities, introducing its Onboard Laboratory incubation program to support local recycling entrepreneurs, enabling prototyping from its 200m² onboard workshop and showcasing the best solutions the team have seen on their journey.

Since 2021 Lubmarine has been playing a supporting role in Plastic Odyssey’s global journey by providing our high-performance lubricants along with our very latest suite of global digital monitoring services.
