In a recent interview with MarineStrategy, IMO Head of Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency, Edmund Hughes, says the maritime industry is ready for January 1.
Mr. Hughes highlighted a number of key factors that lead him to feel confident in the industry’s readiness. The top of this list was confirmation from major refineries and bunkering ports that they will have low sulfur fuel available from Q4 2019 to meet the new 0.5% limit. He also highlighted the extensive guidance the IMO and others have provided to address the various challenges the new regulation poses.
“My view is that there has been sufficient time for preparation,” said Mr. Hughes. “You will recall that the 0.50% limit was adopted in 2008 and confirmed again in October 2016. The indications are that there is now a high level of awareness that the new limit applies from 1st January 2020 – and that the industry is ready.”
